What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. It is a new diseased caused by a coronavirus not previously seen in humans. Symptoms have included fever, cough & difficulty breathing
How can I prevent COVID-19?

You can avoid close contact with people who are sick

Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based sanitizer

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands (best practise to stop completely)

If you feel ill, stay home!

Cover your cough & sneeze. Cough or sneeze into your elbow or tissue (discard of tissue immediately)

Disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces with cleaning spray or wipes
What should I do if I think I have COVID-19?

If you are sick, stand home & use the Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self assessment tool for further instructions
Who is at the most risk?

Elderly and those with underlying health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease & lung disease
Are children at risk?

So far COVID-19 has affected adults much more than children. It is thought to be less severe particularly in children under the age of 10
I am pregnant, should I be worried?

Currently research shows that pregnant women are not at an increased risk from COVID-19. There is also no evidence that COVID infection is passed on to the fetus or has any effect on the fetus
Is there a vaccine available for COVID-19?

A vaccine is currently not available at this time however research to develop a vaccine has begun in many countries
What treatments are available for those infected?

Most mild cases will recover on their own without requiring any medical intervention. Symptom relief medication is recommended

Serious cases may require hospitalization to support vital organ function
Should I wear a mask?

If you are healthy it is NOT recommended

Masks are required to be changed frequently & there is a potential risk of infection with improper use & disposal

You may be asked to wear a mask at a medical facility if you present symptoms of COVID-19 - this is done as a precautionary measure
I am returning from a trip outside of Canada, what do I need to do?

It is recommended to self-isolate on return for 14-days
I have a trip planned outside of the country, should I cancel it?

Albertans are not recommended to travel out of country at this time
Can I use disinfectant sprays or wipes on my hands?

No. These can cause skin & eye irritation and they are not intended for use on human or animals
