Assembly of Treaty Chiefs Unites to revitalize the Red Paper

April 11, 2024 (Treaty No. 6 Territory) — In a historic gathering on April 9, 2024, Chiefs

from Treaty No. 6, Treaty No. 7, and Treaty No. 8 Territories met to forge a powerful

alliance, vowing to uphold Treaty rights, jurisdiction, and to assert sovereignty in the face of

ongoing challenges.

In 1969, the Government of Canada unveiled the White Paper as a sinister attempt to erase

Indigenous identity and assimilate our communities and ancestors. To counter this, Treaty

Chiefs stood firm and wielded the Red Paper as a shield, defending our Treaty rights and

cherished way of life. Yet the struggle continues, as Canada persists in encroaching upon

our rights and falsely claiming jurisdiction over our ancestral lands.

The Chiefs of Treaty No. 6, Treaty No. 7, and Treaty No. 8 in Alberta are now embarking on

a monumental journey to revisit and revitalize the Red Paper, ensuring it echoes the voices

of today and speaks truth to power. This renewed Red Paper will stand as a testament to

our resilience and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Treaty agreements with the

Crown for the prosperity of generations to come.
