Summary of Department of Emergency Management

The department of Emergency Management (EM) is dedicated to ensuring Treaty No. 6 Member Nations’ right to self-determination is honoured and respected. Our Emergency Management Lead works closely with Member Nations to help identify and respond to specific community emergency management needs and build capacity to respond to all hazards.

Mission

Our goal is to strengthen and support the emergency management capacity of Treaty No. 6 member Nations by advancing culturally grounded strategies, building self-sufficient Nation-led teams, and fostering collaborative relationships that ensure the protection and empowerment of communities before, during, and after emergencies.

Vision

A unified and resilient Treaty No. 6 region where every Nation leads its emergency management journey - equipped, connected, and prepared through shared knowledge, sovereignty, and Indigenous-led innovation.

Department Description

  • Applies a First Nations lens to provincial and federal EM policy and advocacy work

  • Acts as a technical advisor to ensure First Nations EM priorities are represented

  • Leads research and policy development initiatives related to emergency preparedness

  • Develops policies, mechanisms and processes that streamline business processes

  • Supports funding proposal development and project implementation for emergency preparedness

  • Builds relationships with public sector, private and non-profit sectors

  • Coordinates emergency information to Member Nations

  • Manages department correspondence in active emergencies

  • Treaty No. 6 First Nations Search and Rescue Team Development

  • Regional Mutual Aid 

  • Development of a First Nations All-Hazards Incident Management Team

  • Emergency preparedness planning and process development

  • Crisis communication logistics and planning for member nations
