Discussions included future resource revenue sharing
November 19, 2025 (Treaty No. 6 Territory) — Chiefs of the Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations in Alberta, Premier Danielle Smith and members of cabinet met at the Alberta Legislature yesterday to discuss matters of mutual concern, as outlined in our Relationship Agreement.
In his opening statement, Grand Chief Greg Desjarlais made it clear that Alberta separation will never happen, and would be a breach of the Crown-Indigenous relationship set out in Treaty No. 6.
The Confederacy discussed creating a Resource Revenue Sharing Agreement (RRSA) with Alberta. A study from the University Of Calgary commissioned by the Confederacy outlined clear benefits and potential structure of an RRSA. The meeting concluded with a request to
create a working group including Treaty No. 6 Chiefs, government officials and subject matter experts to explore this further.
Other topics discussed included the urgent need for First Nations-led solutions in Policing and Affordable Housing and a broader necessity for the inclusion of First Nations in all law and policy decisions. As well, Chiefs expressed their opposition to proposed amendments
to the Water Act, asserting their status as rights holders and sacred role in stewardship of the Land and Waters.
The Confederacy Will continue to assert our Treaty and inherent rights, and looks forward to future conversations with the Government of Alberta - continuing the work of building shared understanding and honouring the spirit and intent of Treaty.
