CONFEDERACY OF TREATY NO. 6 FIRST NATIONS WELCOMES SEPARATION QUESTION RESULT
October 20, 2026 (Treaty No. 6 Territory) - The Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First
Nations welcomes the result of yesterday's referendum vote, which is the majority
decision of Albertans to abandon the path of separatism. We celebrate the First
Nations members who came to the ballot box in record numbers to have their voices
heard. We offer our gratitude and appreciation to all the community organizers and
Get Out the Vote team leads who worked tirelessly to ensure that First Nations voices
were heard in this crucial moment.
Treaty First Nations throughout Alberta have raised their voices in unified opposition
to the separatist threat and won battles in the courtroom proving the illegality of
provincial separation and this referendum process. To appease a fringe minority and
protect their political skins, the UCP government in Alberta has consistently changed
regulations and manipulated the electoral process to ensure this vote took place.
The participation of First Nations in this referendum is not an endorsement of the
process or its validity. This was about protecting Treaty and closing the door on a
dangerous political game which has been a threat and costly distraction for
everyone in this province.
It is time to move forward, and we renew our call to action for all levels of
government to honour Treaty and the Crown-First Nations relationship it carries. Any
discussion about healing and building relationships within Canada must begin with
First Nations and the treaties that made the existence of this rich province and
country possible. Any plan for Canada's prosperity must include First Nations as
rights holders in decision making.
When our Treaty and inherent rights are threatened or disregarded we will not be
idle or silent.
Treaty is Forever.
Grand Chief Joey Pete
