January 16, 2025 (Treaty No. 6 Territory) -
On January 13, 2026, Chiefs of the Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations met with
Alberta Ministers Rajan Sawhney and Brian Jean to discuss the proposed pipeline to Canada's northwest coast.
Treaty No. 6 Chiefs were clear that any discussion regarding resource development in Treaty No. 6 territory must fully respect Treaty rights, First Nations jurisdiction, and the principles of Free, prior and Informed Consent.
Chiefs emphasized that no project can proceed without meaningful engagement directly with Treaty No. 6 First Nations and without clear commitments on environmental protection, revenue sharing, and long-term community benefits.
At this time, Treaty No. 6 Chiefs have not provided support for any proposed pipeline route. Further dialogue will only occur if First Nations are recognized as full partners from the outset and not merely consulted after decisions have already been made.
The Confederacy remains united in protecting Treaty, lands, waters, and the rights of present and future generations.
Grand Chief Joey Pete
Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations
