Treaty No. 6 Chiefs: federal budget lets down First Nations

Critical services at risk beyond 2026

November 6, 2025 (Treaty No. 6 Territory) — The Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First

Nations has the following statement regarding the Government of Canada’s Budget 2025:

We are disappointed in the shortcomings of this budget, which will continue the burdens of

systemic harm and uncertainty for First Nations. Budget 2025 aims to build a stronger

Canada but will fail by widening the disparity between First Nations and the rest of the

country. It leaves critical services for our Peoples without the sustained funding they

require to be effective – and at serious risk of ending beyond 2026. This is not acceptable.

The lack of new investment is alarming and dangerous; creating uncertainty for the future.

Funding for life-saving initiatives like Jordan’s Principle and investment in Emergency

Management must reflect their impact and critical importance.

Canada’s sovereignty and existence were born out of Treaties which have yet to be

honoured in their full spirit and intent. The vision to “Build, Protect and Empower” must

include long-term, stable investment to address the long-neglected responsibilities of our

Treaty relationship. In its budget, this government speaks of its commitment to

Reconciliation but we see little evidence of that in the details. We question how you can

“Build Canada Strong” while failing to invest in Reconciliation – the healing of the nation’s

past – with more than words.

*Please note: The Confederacy will not be doing media interviews at this time.
